i saw stephen colbert talk about this last night and i immediately thought it was amazing.
donorschoose.org allows you to contribute to the classroom of your choice to get them certain things that their school cannot afford. arts and crafts supplies, flashcards, butterfly gardens, etc etc. most of the extras i had in my school as a kid, a lot of people don't get to experience. you can choose the city, poverty level, urgency, and there is a great deal of accountability because it shows how it is directly affecting each child in the classroom. i love giving financially when you can see the direct effects, because so many philanthropic donations go to things like PR and keeping companies going. I much much much prefer to give to small organizations where the money goes directly to those who actually need it.
